This page shows the minimum surgery requirements for dogs at Parkview Animal Hospital.   Please see our surgery recommendations page which shows available surgery recommendations to help make surgical procedures safer and more comfortable for your dog.

 Surgery Requirements for All Dogs

1.       All healthy non-diabetic dogs must be fasted for 12 hours prior to admission for surgery.

2.       All dogs are required to have had a negative stool sample within the past year.   If it has been over a year a fecal floatation test will be performed at a cost of $18 on the day of the surgery

3.       All dogs 6 months of age and over are required to have a negative heartworm test within the past 12 months and to have been given heartworm prevention each month since the heartworm test.   If the heartworm teat and heartworm prevention requirement is not met we will perform a heartworm test at a cost of $28.   We do recommend starting heartworm prevention immediately after a negative heartworm test.   The cost for heartworm preventatives varies depending on the amount and type purchased.

4.       All dogs are required to be current on Distemper vaccination.   If they are not current they will be given a Distemper vaccination costing $19 on the day of the surgery.

5.       All dogs are required to be current on Bordetella vaccination.   If they are not current they will be given a Bordetella vaccination costing $15 on the day of surgery.

6.       All dogs are required to be current on Rabies vaccination if they are not current they will be given a 1 year Rabies vaccination costing $15 or a 3 year Rabies vaccination costing $18 on the day of the surgery.

7.       I.V. Fluids are required for all dental procedures.  I.V. fluids help to prevent dehydration and maintain blood pressure during surgical procedures.  The cost is $36.

Surgery Requirements for All Dogs 5 to 7 years of Age

1.       All dogs 5 to 7 years of age are required to have a pre-surgical blood screen with a CBC costing $46 to check for organ problems and infections on the day of the surgery.

Surgery Requirements for Dogs 8 years of age and older

1.       All Dogs 8 years of age and older are required to have a pre-surgical blood screen with a CBC costing $46 to check for organ problems and infections on the day of the surgery.

2.       All Dogs 5 to 8 years of age are required to have I.V fluids to prevent dehydration and maintain blood pressure during surgical procedures.   The cost is $36.
